BELLA Ideathon: Copernicus innovation challenge

Enhancing the use of Copernicus data in Latin America, the Caribbean and Europe

Innovation has a very important role in identifying opportunities. In this context, RedCLARA, GÉANT and the NRENs of both continents are organizing an ideathon with the aim of stimulating the collaborative generation of ideas that allow promoting the use of Copernicus data in the solution and attention to the great challenges linked to the risk management, environment, climate change, water and land management and food security in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The result we seek with this ideathon is to propose a creative and innovative response to the following general problems:

What kind of processing strategies, computing infrastructure and/or computational paradigm can be used to make data processing more efficient and faster?

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

In what way and with what techniques can AI reduce processing times and help find patterns that are useful for effective decision making?

Data access

What type of cloud or data architecture can contribute to faster and more efficient access to data?

How to efficiently take information to decision makers?

Ideas generated at the ideathon can make use of any combination of digital transformation technologies, including AI, super computing, cloud services, 5G, IoT, quantum computing, big data, blockchain and more.

The ideathon will be virtual and will have synchronous and asynchronous sessions that will allow us to develop an agenda with training and mentoring spaces for the participants and spaces for the construction of the final ideas, as well as a simultaneous activity at the time of opening and closing.

Participants must be organized in working groups of 4 people and the final result per group will be a strategic concept note of the idea.

The evaluation of the final ideas will be in charge of expert juries in the topics worked on. The information produced during the event will be processed by the organizers and made available to the participants on April 5, the date on which three ideas or proposals raised at the event will be selected to deepen and explore the possibility of developing them.

The Ideathon will take place on March 21, 22 and 23. In case of doubts/queries, please write to

The ideathon is aimed at organizations and experts whose field of work is related to the thematic areas of technology included in the activity: Environmental Sciences, Earth and Planetary Sciences, Agricultural and Biometric Sciences, Social Sciences, Engineering and Renewable Energies. They will be invited directly by organizers of the event.

The ideathon also seeks to have an impact on the development of capacities in the collection and use of data on the two continents, the articulation between Latin America, the Caribbean and Europe that allows the identification of the best actions to effectively promote Copernicus data, the promotion of innovative initiatives in the region, the visibility of the Copernicus Programme and maximizing the use of the infrastructure deployed within the framework of the BELLA Programme.

About Copernicus

The Copernicus Programme is the European Earth observation initiative. This Programme generates a huge amount of open data that is produced from various sources (satellite, terrestrial measurements and others). These data are of great value and useful for humanity in general and serve a wide variety of purposes, including monitoring the environment, allowing to assess the impact of climate change, risk management in the face of natural events, water management, information on crops, livestock, human movements, air quality and many others.

In Latin America and the Caribbean, the infrastructure of RedCLARA and of the national research and education networks (NRENs), the development of direct connectivity of the BELLA Programme between Europe and Latin America and the Caribbean through the EllaLink cable, and the set of Initiatives linked to the Digital Alliance, including a second phase of the BELLA project (BELLA II), aim to strengthen and expand the digital ecosystem of Latin America and the Caribbean. This expansion enables relations and exchanges between companies, research centres, educational institutions and national research and education networks; relationships and exchanges that are a great opportunity to achieve the strategic objectives of the region through education, science, technology and innovation.

BELLA II receives funding from the European Union through the Neighbourhood, Development and International Cooperation Instrument (NDICI), under agreement number 438-964 with DG-INTPA, signed in December 2022. The implementation period of BELLA II is 48 months.
