The European Union (EU), in collaboration with the development agency Expertise France, has launched a call for proposals to fund projects focused on biodiversity conservation and monitoring in the Great Forests of Mesoamerica. With a budget of €1.2 million, this initiative aims to promote the sustainable use of the region’s forests and the protection of its biodiversity, as part of the Global Gateway strategy.
This call is part of the implementation of the Great Forests of Mesoamerica Program (PGBM), launched in 2024 as the EU’s contribution to a regional movement that began in 2019. The PGBM is based on a multilateral collaboration through Team Europe, which includes six EU Member States: Germany, Spain, France, Italy, Luxembourg, and Sweden.
In 2025, the program will begin territorial implementation, offering a series of funding opportunities and calls for proposals aimed at local organizations and forest communities in the region. The implementing agencies of the PGBM—Expertise France, ASDI, GIZ, and AECID—have designed these initiatives to operate in a coordinated manner at the regional, national, and territorial levels, with a special focus on local stakeholders committed to conservation, protection, and the sustainable use of forests.
This call is open to a wide range of participants, from international organizations and consortia to community associations and small local initiatives. The selection process includes two modalities: one for multi-country grant projects and another for small-scale local initiatives. The eligible countries for this call are Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, Honduras, Costa Rica, and Panama, with a focus on six key forest areas: La Selva Maya, El Trifinio, La Moskitia, Tortuguero, La Amistad, and El Darién.
This initiative represents a key opportunity for stakeholders committed to protecting Mesoamerican ecosystems and conserving biodiversity. It seeks to encourage projects that promote monitoring and conservation, fostering innovative solutions to protect one of the most biodiverse regions in the world.
